Well spring seems to be running a month early, with great grass growth for most parts of NZ at present. Beef schedules are steady overall this week, and NI lamb is at $8.25 with SI lamb at $8.10. On the dairy front, Friesian bull calves have eased $20 - $30 this week, with beef calves also back in value overall. With the Service bull season not to far away, make sure you keep a look out for service bull listings in the coming weeks, if you need bulls this season. On the beef & sheep front, store cattle are still slow at coming to the market, with this market getting hotter by the week. R1 Friesian bulls are trading around $3.10 - $3.50kgLW, with R2 Friesian bulls fetching around the $3 mark. R2 Steers are moving at $3 - $3.20kgLW, with Heifers around $2.90 - $3kgLW. R1 steers are selling for $3.80 - $4kgLW, with heifers around $3.30 - $3.60kgLW. Well the ewe and lamb markets keep breaking new records, with SIL ewes making up to $240. Hoggets have also hit records, with some fetching up to $250 this week. Store lambs remain strong at $4.20 - $4.80kgLW. Interesting times as we think back to the high dairy payout years, and sheep being swapped for cows all over the country. Now look at sheep farming vs dairy!!
Have a great week from the MLR team.
