The Weekly Weigh In

My Loading Ramp Team

The sound of rain on the roof was great to hear in the middle of the night, with it still raining now, lets hope we get a few more days of this! Beef schedules remain steady again overall, but there are still major backlogs, and this will remain the case well into May if not June as well. NI lamb is back at $6.85, with SI lamb back to $6.70.

On the dairy front, great news this week with the GTD auction up 1.2% overall while we are in the middle of a global pandemic, and after 2 months of falls. I think the next 3 months are going to be rough for the dairy industry, with a drought and uncertain market conditions, but once we hit the new season in July it is going to take off, and NZ is primed to benefit from a global shortage of dairy products for the season ahead! We have plenty of herds and heifers listed if you are still looking for dairies for the coming season, then jump on and take a look today. On the Export front there is an order out for Jersey 1yr heifers, so if you have surplus heifers, get in touch with your stock agent or you can message us for more details!

On the beef & sheep front, well the news here is not so good, but its raining now and everyday the backlog of cattle to the meat processors must be getting less now they up and running again at less capacity. Again as I have said, if cattle are priced right they will sell, but buyers are limited and prices are not where everyone would like them to be. R2 steers are fetching around $2.50 - $2.60kgLW, with R2 heifers around $2.20kgLW. R1 Friesian bulls around $600 for 200kg +. It's very hard to guage this market at present with no saleyards, and even NZ's only online saleyard Bidr are having a high pass in rate, so not much of a gauge here for this market either. We think the best option at the moment is to list them as NEG, and let the buyers make you an offer that you can then consider in your own time. Current weights and good photos are a must to help buyers price your stock without having to view them, but ideally view the stock if you can!
