The latest livestock listings, prices and industry news

The MLR boys are excited to be back again at the Central Districts Field Days from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th at Manfeild Park in Feilding, and we want to see you there! The team will be on site signing up new users and showing everyone how to get the most value from their listings.  You can find us in the Massey University Agriculture Pavilion.  The schedules are steady although with the dry kicking in throughout Canterbury, Manawatu, Taranaki and other regions as well as some short weeks coming with easter soon, the space is certainly tightening in most meat processors around the country.

Dairy cows are coming through the works in great numbers as well as a notable trend of light prime, with some dairy farmers deciding it is an easier option to kill there big R2 heifers. Its great to hear herds are finally starting to get signed up across the country, with people having to start making some serious calls with 1st June now closing in.  Values have obviously dropped with the current pay out and we are seeing opportunists coming to the market. Trying to make the most of the opportunity to get into some ‘cheaper’ dairy cattle, in hopes that the market will lift next season with a shortage of cows and heifer replacements on the ground.

MLR Dairy Livestock Market Indicator

Herd  I/C Heifers Wnr Heifers Aut Calving Cows
$1100 - $1650  $1000 - $1450  $400 - $600  $1200 - $1600

These run weaner cattle are making record values per kg right across the country with top steers fetching from $3.70kgLW to over $4kgLW. Heifers are between $3.40kgLW - $3.80kgLW. The buy in price for these cattle traders is huge so we really hope the volatile schedules stick around next season so the margins remain for the sheep and beef boys. Store lambs are trading around $2kgLW - $2.10kgLW with plenty hitting the market as the dry weather kicks in for some areas now.
